U.S. Green Building Council Institute awarded its LEED Gold Certification to Sony Electronics’ headquarters facility in Rancho Bernardo.

Sony incorporated a number of environmentally-friendly programs, and many aspects of the building are designed to be “green”. The vast majority of the building’s construction debris was diverted from local landfills. Other items credited for the certification included:

  • 47 percent of the building materials were manufactured using recycled materials;
  • Capturing 90 percent of storm water runoff onsite;
  • Solar panels are installed on the building’s parking garage, offsetting 5 percent of total energy costs.

And energy performance is maximized by nearly 23 percent by installing lighting sensors throughout the building.
