Opposition Forms to Church Expansion in 4S Ranch
A controversy erupted recently when a growing Chinese church planning a major expansion in 4S Ranch bumped into opposition from residents in the neighborhood.
The Chinese Bible Church of San Diego has outgrown its facilities in Carmel Mountain and Rancho Penasquitos and plans to build a facility that will have 1,500 church seats, classrooms, a cafe, gym and bookstore on a 9-acre plot of land in 4S Ranch near Camino Del Norte and Four Gee Road, according to www.10News.com. Members of the congregation closed escrow on the parcel of land with the idea of merging into one worship center.
Steve Jones, who told KGTV in San Diego that he shares the same beliefs as the church, is leading a coalition of hundreds of neighbors who are opposing the church moving into their neighborhood.
The San Diego County Planning Commission is reviewing the developer’s application and would have to approve a rezoning for the site, which is just west of the 4S Ranch border and across from Rancho Santa Fe Fire Station #2.
A group called the 4S/Santa Fe Valley Mega-Project Abatement Coalition has formed and announced its mission to preserve safety and quality of life “by preventing large-scale development efforts that have significant negative impacts on our neighborhoods.”
