Mom, Stephani Stone, Ensures Oak Valley Middle School Students Receive Art Lessons
Art Corps Supplier
Stephani Stone is no stranger to moving, having lived in Big Spring, Dallas, Midland, Lubbock, San Antonio, Austin and McKinney, TX. She graduated from Texas Tech in Lubbock, began teaching in San Antonio and worked for the Texas Education Agency, and married her husband, Bill, in Austin. A year after their first son was born, they moved to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia and returned to Austin for the birth of their second son. After the birth of their two daughters, they moved to McKinney, TX, and in 2008 they decided to move to San Diego.
Once the Stones knew they were relocating, they researched schools and neighborhoods. The developer of their McKinney home was the same developer for 4S Ranch; so, they began their search there. They rented in 4S for a year while searching for a home, but ultimately decided to build a home in Maybeck.
Once they were settled, Stephani decided to become involved in her children’s schools. She explained, “Having been a teacher myself, I know the importance of volunteers in the schools.” She served as Oak Valley Middle School parliamentarian for two terms and the secretary for one term.
Then, one year, Stephani received a flier about the Art Corps program while attending back to school night at Oak Valley Middle school and decided to attend the first meeting. “I loved the idea of being in the classroom and giving the students a chance to experience art,” she mentioned excitedly. She is now the supply co-ordinator, which means she ensures the supplies are on hand and organized for each of the five lessons that are taught at each grade, for a total of fifteen lessons. She is also the lead volunteer in three classes and a volunteer in a fourth. This involves attending a workshop for each lesson before presenting it to students. She loves being able to know her kids’ classmates, teachers and other volunteers and seeing the students’ reactions when they realize they will be completing an art lesson. She revealed, “I have really enjoyed seeing the students grow and progress over the years.”
Currently, all of Stephani’s children are teenagers. Her oldest son Trey studies computer engineering at Purdue University, Reece and Bailey attend Del Norte High School, and Cate is an Oak Valley Middle School eighth grader.
When time allows, Stephani hikes local 4S trails and walks to local shops and restaurants.
