Reshaping Vision

Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT) Gently Corrects Vision

EyeLux Optometry is one of the most recognized optometric practices in San Diego and it is located right here in 92127. It is privately owned – the merger of two established practices in 2011 – with four well-credentialed and experienced doctors: Dr. Kimberly Michel, O.D., Dr. Jacquelin Le, O.D., Co-Owner Dr. Brian Chou, O.D., F.A.A.O, and Co-Owner Dr. Kelvin Nguyen, O.D. The facility features the largest selection of eyewear in the vicinity and was recently recognized as an “Optometric Business Innovator” by a national industry publication. “At a local level, EyeLux Optometry is honored to be the highest-rated, most-reviewed business in 92127 on Yelp and Google,” noted Dr. Kimberly Michel. EyeLux Optometry aims to produce outstanding outcomes while still meeting consumer demand for convenience and value. While most in the community think of EyeLux Optometry for eye exams, glasses, and contacts, one of their most innovative services is Corneal Refractive Therapy (CRT).

So what exactly is CRT, you wonder? “CRT is a reversible treatment to reduce or eliminate mild nearsightedness (myopia),” explained Dr. Michel – who, like the other doctors in the practice, is CRT-certified. “Special therapeutic contact lenses are worn during sleep to gently reshape the cornea, the front surface of the eye, providing good natural daytime vision.” CRT is suitable for many patients with mild nearsightedness and, unlike LASIK eye surgery, isn’t restricted to only adults. “Children and young adults between the ages of 8 to 18 years old make up 70% of patients in CRT,” stated Dr. Chou.

“CRT has improved my vision greatly. It is very useful in class, so now I can see better. I have used glasses, though I prefer CRT… using CRT is like, normal, but seeing everything much better.” ~ Jasmine

Another benefit to CRT is its outstanding results without the surgical risk. “Most of our patients in CRT are active in sports and want unhindered daytime vision,” added Dr. Michel. “Additionally, there is mounting scientific evidence that CRT reduces the natural progression of nearsightedness during childhood.”

Comparatively speaking, the cost is an upside, as well. “The fee for CRT prescribing including initial lenses is approximately $1,500 – less than half the cost of LASIK surgery,” noted Dr. Michel.

“I’m pleasantly surprised to wake up each morning feeling like I’ve had LASIK eye surgery. Even my daily activities have become a lot more enjoyable. I love not having to worry about glasses falling off, or contact lenses getting wet and ruined while swimming with my children. I’m very happy with CRT and highly recommend it to other candidates!” ~ Angie

With a favorable track record since FDA approval in June of 2002, CRT is established as a safe and effective form of vision correction, though it’s still not well-known among the general public. “The risks with CRT are similar to traditional contact lens wear,” stated Dr. Michel. “The CRT consultation for eligibility is complimentary during a comprehensive examination at EyeLux Optometry.”
