Lions and Dragons and Goldfish, Oh My!

Local residents of all ages gathered to celebrate the Lunar New Year with a carnival hosted by the San Diego Chinese Cultural Association (SDCCA) and North County Chinese School on the Oak Valley Middle School campus. The annual carnival was free to the public and allowed the whole community to welcome in the Year of the Sheep. Traditional Chinese musical performances and folk dances entertained the crowds, along with martial art demonstrations. Participants loved the brightly colored dragon and lion dances, with dancers maneuvering elaborate puppets and costumes. Children got to catch goldfish to take home, toss bean bags, and play other carnival games, while their parents browsed the silent auction. Thirty-two booths offered traditional food from Guang Dong, Shanghai, Sichuan, and Taiwan. For more about the SDCCA and its programs visit
