Mr. Coughlin Onstage
Students at Westview High School know him as their social science teacher. Outside of class, Martin Coughlin is a singer-songwriter, soccer coach, and family man. He and his wife, Lauren, have three children at Westwood Elementary.
His own journey – from pro soccer player to teacher to musician – is rooted in Paisley, Scotland, were he was born. Martin reflected, “I have great memories of being at my grandparents’ house as a kid and listening to all my relatives singing songs and laughing.” His family moved to Rancho Bernardo from Scotland when Martin was 11 years old. His parents still live here and his siblings live nearby. Martin left high school to play pro soccer for Glasgow Celtic in 1994. “One of my favorite memories was defeating our biggest rivals, Glasgow Rangers, on my 18th birthday, especially since I assisted the goal that won us the match,” shared Martin. He retired from pro soccer after three years and returned home for school. While in college at CSU San Marcos earning his B.A. in Social Science, he and his brothers started the band Square Go and played in notable San Diego venues.
Martin took a few years off from music before writing and recording as a solo artist beginning in 2010. He’s drawn to a diversity of genres from Motown to country. “But I always seem to come back to the timeless songs from The Beatles, The Eagles, and Fleetwood Mac,” mentioned Martin. His publishing and production company, Laki Music, produces shows at several venues, including The Company Pub and O’Harley’s, where he also hosts weekly open mics. “I have a great relationship with Studio West and will continue to record and produce some records through the end of the year there,” added Martin. KPRI 102.1 FM plays him and has featured Martin in some of their sponsored shows.
He completed his master’s degree in his first years at Westview High, and has been on staff since it opened more than a decade ago. “I absolutely love teaching at Westview High as it’s an amazing school with fantastic kids and a wonderful staff,” shared Martin. The Coughlins feel fortunate to raise their kids here. “Even though I was born in Scotland, and very proud of that heritage, home will always be Rancho Bernardo for me,” he added. Stay tuned for Martin Coughlin onstage and on air.
