A Marvelous Mix

Even though she lives in 4S Ranch, Bailey Brennen cannot say enough about her charter school in Escondido. Attending small classes at Classical Academy High, she feels the teachers are helpful, friendly, and passionate about subjects and students. “Even teachers who have never had me in class say hello to me and know me by name,” she said. Bailey is a National Merit Commended Scholar with a perfect 800 on both the Math II and Physics portions of the SAT.

Her robotics team, The Agency, practices year-round and won the Xerox Creativity Award 2015 at the very first Robotics San Diego Regional. They plan on competing at Nationals, held this year in St. Louis. “Robotics is quite an expensive endeavor,” Bailey explained, “and our team’s goal is to raise $40,000 per season.”

Her Academic League team is currently undefeated and was featured on North County Academic League’s televised event in February. This is Bailey’s favorite extracurricular activity, because she feels it’s very rewarding to answer questions correctly. “Math comes very naturally to me so I am quite good with the calculus questions,” she smiled. “I’m also the team’s guru on Norse and Greek mythology.”

With Physics emerging as Bailey’s favorite class, her teacher, Mr. David Bower, has been her inspiration. He suggested she join the robotics team, and this led to her enrollment as one of only two girls taking AP Computer Science last year, plus a SolidWorks CAD class at Palomar to further assist her team. “Mr. Bower always made his lectures interesting,” Bailey explained. “I was truly sad when the class ended.”

Besides many academic pursuits, Bailey shares her mother’s passion for quilting. She attends a group sew-in every Friday night and is currently working on a massive pixel quilt of Nintendo’s Super Mario characters. She hopes to enter the quilt into this year’s San Diego Fair. Bailey is also teaching herself Japanese, which she’d like to utilize during a future college trip abroad. Speaking of college, Bailey aspires to study Neuroscience, uncovering root causes of developmental and learning disabilities.
