4S Ranch resident Elena Crespo was selected as Scout of the Year by the California Veterans of Foreign Wars. The VFW has strong ties to community youth groups, particularly to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America. The Scout of the Year program recognizes standout citizenship, patriotism, and love of the country – with an opportunity to win college scholarships of up to $5,000. Elena will represent California for the selection of National Scout of the Year.

The scholarship is open to Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Elena completed a lengthy application and interview, and passed through the local, regional, and state levels of the selection process. The selection committees looked at the types of activities she was involved with as a Girl Scout and the impact of her contributions to her communities. Elena has focused on providing activities for younger Girl Scouts, as well as assisting students in Latin American schools.
