Rancho Bernardo resident and artist Keming Chen recently won first place for the miniature category at the San Diego Watercolor Society’s March member’s exhibit. Award-winning juror Chuck McPherson praised the painting, titled Party Time: “The painting was drafted very well, using a small space in a dynamic way, pushing the unusual subject right out of the frame!”

Keming was born in China, and fled with his family to Taiwan when he was young. He’s loved art since childhood. Even after receiving his M.S. in engineering from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, he merged his love of art and science through work in color image processing. He retired in 2013 and turned his attention to watercolor painting – now, he paints for about eight hours a day.

The San Diego Watercolor Society is a nonprofit founded in 1965, dedicated to education, exhibition, and promotion of watermedia painting. Learn more at www.sdws.org.
