Santaluz resident Dr. Jeff Umansky has an impressive educational background. He went to UC Berkeley for college, UCLA for medical school, UC Irvine for general surgery training, Cleveland Clinic Florida for plastic Surgery training, and has had a cosmetic surgery fellowship in Boston with the Harvard Plastic Surgery Faculty. Upon completing his education a little more than 10 years ago, Jeff returned back to San Diego to join his father and brother at his father’s plastic surgery practice in La Jolla.
After his father’s retirement, Jeff took over the practice, and he and his brother now share the office. Jeff also works as an assistant clinical faculty member at UCSD. This would be enough to satisfy most working professionals, but Jeff also wanted to apply his skills in a charitable way. That’s why he volunteers his time towards the nonprofit organization Fresh Start Surgical Gifts.
Elaborating on the mission behind Fresh Start, Jeff revealed, “Fresh Start transforms the lives of disadvantaged infants, children, and teens with physical deformities caused by birth defects, accidents, abuse, or disease through the gift of reconstructive surgery and other healthcare services.” As for his own reason for performing volunteer plastic surgery on Fresh Start kids, Jeff proclaimed, “It is rewarding to help children to feel confident about themselves so that they can focus on enjoying their lives without worrying about their physical deformities.”
Fresh Start Surgical Gifts will host its 25th Anniversary Black and White Butterfly Ball on Saturday, October 15, 2016 at the Hyatt Regency La Jolla at Aventine, 3777 La Jolla Village Drive, San Diego, CA 92122.
In his precious free moments, Jeff spends as much time as possible with his wife and two young children, and he can often be found landscaping the family yard with more exotic plants and trees. Jeff also enjoys surfing and has surfed in many far-flung spots, including Indonesia, South Africa, Fiji, Australia, and New Zealand. He also is a tropical fish aficionado, and is even part owner of the Shipwreck Cove Custom Aquariums business in Encinitas.
Grateful for the Fresh Start charity and all that it does, Jeff graciously commented, “My role as a surgeon is just the tip of the iceberg. The unsung heroes are the staff and volunteers that coordinate host families, international travel visas, and make it all possible.”
