Raising Boys Who Give Back

When Sandy Lamb learned about Boys Team Charity (BTC) from her sister in Arizona, she immediately knew she had to bring it home to 92127. With the organization’s focus of giving back to the community, BTC promotes altruism in boys through participation in philanthropic activities with their families. Since the Del Norte League officially started in January of this year, more than 80 boys and their families have volunteered over 1,400 hours.

volunteer_lamb2Sandy serves as the founding league president for the Del Norte chapter, the 15th league in the country and the first in San Diego. “My heart is endlessly warmed when I see our boys and parents lending their helping hands to seniors, the disadvantaged, or those with special needs,” she shared. The boys and their families have worked with over 20 philanthropies, including the San Diego Food Bank, St. Vincent de Paul, the Ronald McDonald House, and The Fund for Wildlife.

BTC is open to boys in grades 7 to 12 who live in the Del Norte High School zone. They currently have room for new members to join with their families. “More often than not, the boys reflect that volunteering is more fun than they thought!” Sandy said. “My son recently noted that ‘every time we volunteer somewhere, they are happy to see us.’” The opportunity to volunteer with her son is a great benefit of BTC. “Kids in our area have so much to share with others and working alongside their parents can make a significant impact on the community while strengthening their relationships and building new friendships,” she said.

For Sandy and her family – husband Scott, son Finley, and daughter Faith – these relationships and friendships are at the core of their priorities. They love their Santaluz neighborhood where kids play ball and ride their bikes in the cul-de-sac, stop by to say hello, or come over for Sandy’s cooking.
Sandy recognizes this sense of community across 92127, which helped launch the local league of the BTC so successfully. “The right combination of talent and passion allowed us to start this league up in a very short time,” she said. “People thank me for my efforts, but I am the one who is grateful for the membership’s shared vision.”
