In It Together

family_im_4The Im family has an entangled history with California. Jim and Ellen Im both grew up in separate areas of Orange County, met in dental school in Baltimore, MD, got married in Southern California, settled down for a while in Maryland, and, in 2014, decided to permanently move to San Diego. “We knew it was going to be a challenge to find the right community for our growing family,” Ellen shared. But when they visited San Diego to look at potential areas, one community stood out from the rest. “We really appreciate everything about the Del Sur community,” they said. “The neighborhood has a good vibe and is made mostly of young families that are friendly and like-minded.”

The family, which includes daughter Eden and sons Andrew and David, are very active in their community. Eden, a second grader at Del Sur Elementary School, enjoys softball, soccer, gymnastics, and being involved with Girl Scouts. Andrew, in kindergarten at Del Sur Elementary, plays with the 4S Ranch Youth Soccer Association and plans on joining Boy Scouts next year. Both children also love to draw and play with their baby brother David.

“We love to do everything as a family.”

Jim, who is now a scientist but used to be a dentist, volunteered for medical missions that provided free dental services to the underserved both abroad and in the local community. And as devout Christians, the Ims attend church regularly and are involved with church groups as well.

While each member of the Im clan has their own personal interests, they enjoy spending time together at local pools, parks, and trails. “We love to do everything as a family,” they exclaimed. Ellen and Jim also make it a priority to spend individual time with each of their children with one-on-one dates. “It gives us an opportunity as parents to make them feel special and boost their confidence,” Jim and Ellen said, “by calling out the good we see in them, displaying affection without fear of sibling jealousy, instilling good values and manners, and having open, honest conversations.” That is one family tradition definitely worth treasuring.
