Family-Friendly and Community-Driven, Waypoint Public Appeals to Del Sur Residents

In the family-friendly community of Del Sur, having a family-friendly restaurant is essential. Waypoint Public’s Del Sur location is just that: a place where kids can play and parents can relax while they munch on house-made fare made with local ingredients and sip on local craft beers, unique cocktails, and California wines.

John Pani, owner of Waypoint Public and a San Diego native, opened his first location in North Park in 2013. “At the time, North Park was in the early stages of a resurgence led by some awesome food-driven restaurants and craft beer- focused bars and breweries,” explained John. “The missing component seemed to be a culinary-driven restaurant with a desire to integrate great food, awesome beer, and local culture.” John opened Waypoint Public to provide just that. At the same time, he also noticed many young families moving into the North Park neighborhood. “We wanted to be a place where young families felt comfortable, so we included a small area in the restaurant where the kids could be entertained,” he added.

“We want to support the community. As much as we can get involved, we want to. If there is an opportunity for us to help, we will.”

John chose to open up Waypoint’s Del Sur location in April 2017 and integrated those same components that made his North Park location so successful into his new restaurant, including a children’s play area and casual San Diego-inspired décor, utilizing light materials and bright, crisp colors.

A strong community feel and the desire to grow his brand as a family-friendly gastropub is what attracted John to Del Sur. “We also really liked the mix of tenants,” shared John. “Our neighbors were local, homegrown businesses that would be expanding for the first time. We felt that we had the opportunity to be part of a newer, growing community, and that was very attractive to us.” Waypoint Public also supports local education, athletics, and child-focused resources.

The menu at Waypoint consists of California-inspired gastropub fare, ranging from smoked steak crostini to IPA battered fish and chips. “All menu items are ‘smart-sourced’ by purchasing local, sustainable, organic ingredients when possible,” noted John. The restaurant also has a 30-tap direct-draw beer system, and John added, “We pour beers from the newest, smallest local breweries to the most established. If they make great beer, we will pour it!”

When asked what sets the restaurant apart, John replied, “Most importantly, our hospitality needs to set us apart. There is nothing better than authentic, great service and creating an environment where people are comfortable and truly able to enjoy themselves. This is what we aim to offer.”
