Young Gamer

student_mcloughlin2While many teens love to play video games, not many actually design their own. Del Sur resident Max McLoughlin has done just that! A high school junior, Max is the creator of a game called Invasion Without Authorization, released in the App Store. This free game, which can be played on iPhones, is a simple shooting game that can be played for a few minutes or straight through. “The premise of the game is that the player has to kill invading aliens using cannon fire,” Max explained. “The challenge is that the aliens are hiding, and the player needs to ricochet cannon balls off walls to kill them. There are 36 levels.” Max developed this game over the summer as part of a program called MakeSchool.

While Max has dual citizenship with the United States and Canada, he’s lived in Del Sur for the past eight and a half years. Max attends Del Norte High School, where his favorite subject is AP Computer Science. “What I like most about the school is that I get to take classes like 3D Animation and Introduction to Computer Science,” Max shared. “I have had the good luck of having several teachers that really enjoy teaching.”

“Now I compete in the largest indoor competition in the world every year, in both state and national competitions.”

He’s been shooting since sixth grade. “I just thought it was cool and wanted to give it a try,” Max recalled. “Now I compete in the largest indoor competition in the world every year, in both state and national competitions.”

Max is inspired by actor and filmmaker Tommy Wiseau. “He had a dream and he made it happen. He has a lot of inspiring quotes,” Max said. “When someone asked him how to start writing a screenplay, he responded ‘start.’ I find that motivational.” He has dreams of his own, which include studying game design at the University of Utah. “I want to work in the video game industry,” he declared. With such an early start in the gaming world, Max is already on his way!
