Higher Goals

volunteer_chinoysalceda3Playing soccer is a passion for Scripps Ranch resident Rehan Chinoy and 4S Ranch resident Kevin Salceda. They have been playing the sport since they were four years old and are grateful for the many opportunities soccer has afforded them, both on and off the field. Using this passion for soccer, Rehan and Kevin founded Kicks4Kids, an organization whose mission is to collect and deliver used, but functional, sports equipment to less fortunate children in San Diego and around the world. “During my junior year of high school, I interned with Yalla San Diego. This group combines the promise of education and the passion of soccer to inspire refugee and immigrant youth to achieve a college education. In talking with Kevin, we came up with the idea of getting used cleats for the kids after realizing how fast some of our soccer teammates were going through shiny new cleats,” explained Rehan.

volunteer_chinoysalceda4Their first Kicks4Kids donation drive was for Yalla San Diego and it was a huge success. The group’s second equipment drive benefited the American Haitian Foundation. Kicks4Kids collected more than 100 pairs of cleats and more than 200 jerseys. “The most rewarding part of founding this organization is seeing the smiles of the kids wearing the equipment we collected,” stated Kevin. Rehan agrees. “When we saw the kids at Yalla get new shoes and when we were sent pictures of kids in Haiti with their new gear, we felt that through a simple act, we made a difference,” said Rehan. Kicks4Kids continues to conduct local drives with soccer clubs in San Diego. According to Kevin, one of their next big projects is to hold an equipment drive for children in Columbia.

Rehan and Kevin attend Del Norte High School and enjoy the many academic, athletic, and extracurricular opportunities at the school. English literature, calculus, and U.S. history are among Rehan’s favorite subjects, as he loves the analytical problem-solving skills required in math, but also enjoys expressing his creativity through liberal arts. He is a voracious reader and loves listening to music and going to concerts. Kevin’s favorite subjects at Del Norte are math, chemistry, and physics. He also loves being outdoors, enjoys hiking and exploring, and is actively involved in the youth group at St. Michael’s Church.

Currently, Kicks4Kids has about 20 to 30 members who help with hosting drives, itemizing the collected gear, and delivering the equipment. For more information about Kicks4Kids and ways to become involved, email
