Del Sur Elementary School teacher Shantel Raquel was recently selected as one of the three 2018 Poway Unified School District (PUSD) Teachers of the Year. Katie Wu of Westview High School and Ana Collins of Valley Elementary School were the other two teachers recognized.

Shantel has taught for 18 years and currently teaches a blended first and second grade class. She has a knack for connecting with shy or withdrawn students, and customizes her eclectic teaching approach to best benefit each individual student. She values mistakes as opportunities for students to learn and grow, and she applies her innovative, collaborative approach to projects outside the classroom too, from Literacy Night to the PTA Reflections program.

“Teaching is a profession of both the heart and mind,” said Superintendent Dr. Marian Kim-Phelps. “These teachers are ‘all-in’ when it comes to making a difference in our students’ lives. They recognize it’s not just academics, but meeting students’ social, emotional, and mental health needs that contributes to our students’ overall success.”
