New Del Sur Neighborhood Park Officially Opens
Over 100 community members gathered on Aug. 25 to officially open the new Del Sur Neighborhood Park. Attendees included Councilmember Mark Kersey, Recreation Council Chair Steve Leffler, Realtor and Del Sur community member Anne Schreiber, and former San Francisco Giants baseball player and Del Sur community member Brett Bochy. Local businesses donated shaved ice and ice cream for the summer celebration.
“Parks like this give my family and I another reason to love our neighborhood,” said Bochy. “The Del Sur Park’s open space reminds me of when my dad and I would play catch, and I can’t wait to do the same with my kids here.”
Del Sur Neighborhood Park is five acres and provides a welcome gathering place for community members. Amenities include a multi-use backstop, full-sized basketball court, tennis court, observation deck, children’s play area, open space, picnic tables, gazebo, and comfort station, as well as a 5,830-square-foot skateboard plaza. Construction began in June 2016, and the park is part of Mayor Kevin Faulconer’s campaign to break ground on or upgrade 50 San Diegan parks over the following five years. Over a dozen other park projects are currently in progress.
“The residents of Del Sur came together to enjoy the park for the first time today, and the sense of community pride was undeniable,” said Kersey.
