Arts in Education

Poway OnStage’s 2019-2020 Arts in Education Initiative has plenty in store for local elementary students. This season’s events include two bus-in shows for Poway Unified School District (PUSD) students. The first, Pirate School: Follow Your Compass, took place in October, and the second, Catapult Shadow Dance Company, will be March 29. Poway OnStage provides study guides for the teachers attending, and performers give Q&A sessions for students after each show.

“We are so proud of this partnership with the Poway Unified School District, and excited for this year’s offerings,” said Michael Rennie, Poway OnStage President and CEO. “In addition to our more established programs, we now offer students a chance to come in to a performance with a deeper understanding of what they are about to see, and an opportunity to have an up-close-and-personal experience with the artists.”

Poway OnStage established the Arts in Education Initiative in 1999, at a time when PUSD budget cuts were substantially impacting music programs. “Our board at the time felt that as the stewards of Poway’s performing arts community, we had an obligation to respond to the reduction in arts programs in our schools,” Rennie said. The initiative continues to thrive and integrate with state standards through individual donations, corporate philanthropy, and grants. Programs include a free musical theater camp every March for grades K-12 and Introduction to Instruments for fourth graders.
